RICEVILLE, IOWA - Gary James Torney, 71, of Riceville, died Tuesday November 16, 2010 at his residence following an illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at the Riceville United Methodist Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.
Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and one hour before services at the church on Friday.

#2:RICEVILLE, IOWA - Gary James Torney, 71, of Riceville passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010, at his residence following an illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at the Riceville United Methodist Church in Riceville with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.
Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville on Thursday, Nov. 18, from 4-8 p.m. and one hour before services at the church on Friday, Nov. 19.
Gary was born Oct. 14, 1939, to Glen and Mary (Buttolph) Torney in Riceville, where he lived his entire life. He was united in marriage to Geraldine Taets on May 5, 1962. To this union two children were born, Connie and Randy.
During his high school years at Riceville High he was an avid Riceville Wildcat and worked at the Iris Theatre as a projector operator and at Kinneman's Conoco gas station until graduating in 1958.
After graduating he went to work for Grupp's, driving gravel truck. Later he started at the Chicago Great Western Railroad as a depot agent for 13 years at different locations. From 1972-1975 he was the chief of police of Riceville. He then went to work for the Mitchell County Sheriff's Department where he retired after 25 years as a Mitchell County deputy sheriff with the number 66-2.
He was a lifelong trap-shooter with many awards from surrounding state shoots. He included his grandsons Lyle and Ryan in his passion for trapshooting. Early years were also spent racing his cars at several local dirt tracks, and in later years he enjoyed building and racing with his son, Randy, and then as the promoter at the Cresco Speedway.
Several other interests included snowmobiling, riding his Goldwing motorcycle, casino trips, coffee at Andy's, time spent with his kids and grandkids and his many travels with his wife Gerry.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine; daughter, Connie (Dean) Eastman; son, Randy (Amy) Torney; and grandchildren Lyle (JoLynn) Eastman, Ryan Eastman (Karli Friedrich) and April Torney, and great-granddaughter Kallie Eastman, all of Riceville, and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Mary Torney; his parents-in-law, Rene and Inga Taets; brothers, Gaylord and Ronnie; and other extended family and friends.
