In Osage Home

Was a Clothier in Osage for
Many Years -- Had been
Ailing for Years.

Edward K. Evens, for forty years an important figure in the affairs of Osage and Mitchell county, died Tuesday night at his home on west Chase street, Osage. He had been in poor health for several years, and for the past year had been a partial invalid.

BORN IN WISCONSIN, 1859

He was born in Columbia, county, Wisconsin, in 1859, the son of Kittle Evens, a native of Norway. He spent his boyhood in Minnesota.

Mr. Evens first worked in a clothing store at Kasson, Minnesota, as an employee of Jacob Leuthold. In 1888 he purchased an interest in that business, remaining there until 1891, when he came to Osage and established a store with Mr. Leuthold as a partner. In 1899, Mr. Evens established a store at Greene under the name of Evens, Blumer & Co. In 1905 he established a men's clothing store at Northwood, which was conducted under the name of Evens, Johnson & Co. In 1913 a fourth store was started at Menomonie, Wisconsin, Evens, Tobin & Co. During late years he disposed of all his store interests.

He was also interested in farming and owned farm property in Minnesota and in Mitchell county, besides considerable other real estate. The Osage store was purchased twelve years ago by Jacob Leuthold Jr., George Cummings and Roy Sexe.

In 1889 he married Ida Leqve, who survives him, with one adopted daughter, Mrs. Edwin, Joehnke, of Centerville.

He was a member of the Osage Lutheran Church for many years. He was a member of the Masonic Blue lodge, the Royal Arch chapter, and the Coeur de Leon Commandery in Osage, and of the Mystic Shrine, El Kahir temple, Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, conducted by the Rev. H. Solem at the Osage Lutheran Church, with burial in the Osage cemetery.

NOTES:

The Osage City Cemetery listing on IaGenWeb/Mitchell shows him as:

EVERS, EDWIN K. (died/buried) 10 OCT 1936 (loc)1191 2 63

Ancestry.com had his parents' names as:
Kittle Evenson Folkestad and Kari Larsdatter Grinde.

One source said his middle name was "Kittleson", but this may be incorrect.
It might be just "Kittle" (like his father's given name), or "Klyde" -- who knows? [kk]
