Funeral services for Ernest J. Hollatz, Sr., 79, who died Tuesday, April 5, 1960, were held Friday, April 8 at the First Lutheran church with the Rev. Don R. Hamilton officiating.
Ernest J. Hollatz, Sr. was born September 19, 1881 in Newburg township, the son of Albert and Hannah Hollatz. He was baptized November 6, 1881 by the Rev. F. Wiegner and confirmed April 7, 1895 by the Rev. E. Hantel.
On November 8, 1906 he was united in marriage to Lizetta Kleinwort at the Kleinwort home in Newburg Township. Three children were born to this union.
Mr. Hollatz was a successful farmer, and active in church and community work. He was a trustee in his township for 39 years, served as a member of the Carpenter school board for 25 years, and was a director and vice-president of the Carpenter Savings Bank since 1933.
Mr. Hollatz spent his entire life in Newburg Township living on three different farms, and in 1899 when he was seven years old moved with his parents and sister to the family farm one and a half miles east of Carpenter where he spent 61 years of his life. Ten years ago he and his wife moved to a newly built home in St. Ansgar.
Mr. Hollatz always enjoyed good health until about six months ago when he began to fail. He submitted to surgery in November at a Rochester, Minnesota hospital from which he never fully recovered. He died at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ewald Ehlke.
Surviving are his wife, Lizetta; two daughters, Mrs. Ewald (Bernice) Ehlke, Mrs. Virgil (Osie Mae) Adrian of Baudette, Minnesota and a son, Ernest, Jr., now residing on the family farm; also one sister, Mrs. Julius Hartwig of St. Ansgar; 11 grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran cemetery with Rev. Hamilton in charge of the committal services.
