Edward H. Norby, 1881-1941

Edward Norby, a former Mitchell County native, died suddenly Saturday in North Dakota. His body was brought to his old home church, the Rock Creek Lutheran, for burial. The funeral was held on Tuesday, a short service at the Shelledy funeral home preceding the one at the church.

Edward H. Norby, son of Halstein and Taran Norby, was born in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, Iowa on November 27, 1881. He grew to manhood in the parental home, attended the rural schools of his community and also the St. Ansgar seminary.

After completing his education, he worked as a clerk at the Goplerud store in Osage. In 1907 he went to McVille, North Dakota, where he operated a store of general merchandise. Later he held for twelve years, a position as cashier of the State Bank of McVille. Resigning from this position, he engaged in farming at Parshall, North Dakota, until he moved to Washburn, North Dakota where he filled the position of bookkeeper in the office of the Farm Security Administration.

He was married to Gladys Smalley of Osage, Iowa on November 27, 1907. Immediately after their marriage they moved to North Dakota. To this marriage, one daughter, Mrs. Bernard Spielman, was born. Besides his widow and daughter, the following near relatives survive: one grandchild, Mary Ann Spielman; one brother, Carl Norby; two sisters, Mrs. Martin (Elizabeth) Klemesrud and Mrs. N.J. (Thea) Johnson, all of this vicinity.

The departed brother was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Rock Creek Lutheran church. While living at Washburn, North Dakota, he affiliated with the Lutheran church in that place.

Mr. Norby has been an exceptionally strong and active man until about a week ago. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bernard Spielman, at Underwood, North Dakota, on Saturday, June 14, 1941. The cause of his death was heart failure.
