Karine Simonsen, 1847-1929

Karine Simonsen was born in Vigen, Begnadalen, Valdres, Norway on November 27, 1847. In 1868 she came to America and located temporarily at Black Earth, Dane County, Wisconsin. In 1869 she came to Mitchell County, Iowa. During the first years in this community she worked as a domestic in different places.

On April 8, 1872, she was married to Erik Simonsen and they located at once on their farm in Cedar Township. Here they lived until 1876, when they moved to a farm in Rudd Township, Floyd County, Iowa. In 1919 she, with her husband, moved to Rudd where she lived until the time of her death. Her husband preceded her in death on April 20, 1924.

Mrs. Simonsen was brought up in the Lutheran Church and has been an active member of the Rock Creek Lutheran Church and was a charter member of the Ladies’ Aid society.

She had always enjoyed good health until about two weeks ago. She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Julia Witter on June 20, 1929. Blood poisoning was the cause of her death.

In her wedlock four children were born. Of these the following survive: Martin Simonsen of Rudd Township, Mrs. Julia Witter and Mrs. Clara Dean, both of Rudd. One brother, Erik Johnson of Boyceville, Wisconsin also survives.

Funeral services were held by the Rev. O.C. Myhre, in the Rock Creek Lutheran Church on June 22, 1929 at 10 a.m. Interment was made in the Rock Creek Lutheran cemetery.
