ST. ANSGAR, IOWA - Elmer L. Halvorson, 71, died Friday at the Wells, Minnesota hospital.

Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church here. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery with Schroeder & Houg Funeral Home in charge.

Surviving are his wife, Florence; a daughter, Mrs John (Joan) Evans, Houston, Tex.; a son, Maj. John Halvorson, in service in Viet Nam; five grandchildren, two sisters, Clara Halvorson, St. Ansgar; Mrs. Lorene Spender, Boonton, N.J.; a brother, Irving, St. Ansgar.

Funeral services were conducted for Elmer L. Halvorson at First Lutheran Church Tuesday, July 7, 1964 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Don Comnick of St. Ansgar and Pastor Leif Evans of Des Moines officiating. Mr. Halvorson passed away on Friday, July 3, 1964 at the Wells Municipal Hospital.

Elmer Lewis Halvorson, son of Andrew and Lucinde, nee Helgeson, Halvorson, was born on July 24, 1893 on the Halvorson farm south of St. Ansgar. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed in First Lutheran Church in his youth. He remained a life-long member. He attended the rural Erickson school near his home and later the St. Ansgar Seminary. The deceased had been in poor health since September 1963, when he underwent major surgery at the Memorial Hospital in Lawton, Oklahoma, and in June of this year was a patient at the Veteran's Hospotal at Ft. Snelling for three weeks where he submitted to further surgery.

As a young man he entered the grocery business in St. Ansgar in the building now occupied by the Interstate Company. He operated the business for sometime prior to entering service in World War I. He was inducted into the Army at Osage, Iowa, on the 26th of July 1918, serving in Belgium, France and Germany until just prior to his discharge on November 25, 1919.

On June 28, 1925, he was united in marriage to Florence Peterson at First Lutheran Church by the late Pastor M.E. Waldeland. A son and daughter were born to this union. The deceased was a resident of St. Ansgar until 5 1/2 years ago when he and his wife moved to Lawton, Oklahoma. During their residence in Lawton he was a communicant and regular attendant at St. John's Lutheran Church and received his last communion of Sunday, June 28 from Pastor L. James Sjolie, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wells, Minnesota. He attained the age of 70 years, 11 months and 9 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and five brothers. Survivors include his wife of Wells, Minnesota, a son Major John Andrew Halvorson, who has just returned from service in Viet Nam, and Mrs. John Evans (Joann) of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren, Steven, Judy and Kathy Halvorson and John and Timothy Evans, a brother, Irvin and sisters, Clara of St. Ansgar and Mrs. Lorene Spender of Boonton, New Jersey.

Interment was in First Lutheran Cemetery with Pastor Don Comnick in charge, followed by military rites conducted by the Walter T. Enneberg Post of the American Legion. Pallbearers were Morris Hendrickson, Otto Hendrickson, Alfred Kittleson, Anton Olson, W. Leon Thorson, and Wilmer Mueller.
