OSAGE, IOWA - Harold A. Machin, Sr., age 93, of Osage, died Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating and a flag presentation by the Osage American Legion Post 278 and the Osage V.F.W. Post 7920. Inurnment will take place at the Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 28 at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.
Harold Allen Machin, Sr. was born April 11, 1917 in Ackworth, Iowa the son of Arthur Allen and Emma Eloise (Dixon) Machin. He attended Iowa country schools. Harold was united in marriage to Kathleen Joan Sigler on July 12, 1937 at the Episcopal Parsonage in Cresco, Iowa. Joan was 17 and Harold was 20. To this union seven children were born.
Harold served in World War II in the Philippines. He was a life long member of the Osage American Legion Post 278 and the Osage V.F.W. Post 7920. After the war he worked at Cedar Valley Produce, the Oliver Corporation and worked for 16 years for W.W. Runge Farms. He would later tell his son John, that one of his fondest memories was the smell of freshly plowed soil. After moving to Osage he worked for Richard’s Implement and M&W Electric.
In 1982 he retired from the Mitchell County Road Maintenance Department where he was always very proud of “his roads.” Harold enjoyed fishing, gardening and mowed his lawn until the age of 92. He took pride in assisting his friends and neighbors with yard care and chores. After Joan’s death in 1999 he enjoyed winter in Donna, Texas looking forward to resting in the sun and visiting with neighbors.
Harold is survived by his seven children, Jo Anne Machin of Osage; Charles Machin of Alta Vista; John (Jova) Machin of Osage; Mary Napier of Monument, Colorado; Bernice (Arnold) Curry of Houston, Missouri; Kathleen (Larry) Miller of Kansas City, Missouri; Harold (Kathleen) Machin Jr. of Fort Collins, Colorado; 27 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren; and 31 great-great-grandchildren.
He will lovingly be remembered by his family, many friends, neighbors and his special friend, Mrs. Alice Schroeder of La Porte City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joan; sisters, Dorothy Machin, Ardis Machin, Bernice Royek, and Bess Bucholtz; brothers, Robert J. and Raymond Machin; 2 sons-in law, Ronald Hemrich and John Napier.
