Rachel Sarah Nicholas Graves, 1869-1937
Rachel Sarah Nicholas was born in Pembricshire, Wales, July 4, 1869, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bessie Minnis, Tuesday morning, July 13, 1937.
While she was still an infant her parents came to the US and settled in Waukegan, Illinois, living there until she was about 9 years old when the family moved again; this time to Mitchell County, Iowa. For a short time they lived in Brownville and then moved to a farm north of David where she spent her girlhood.
She was married to William James Graves December 11, 1889. To this union were born four children: Mrs. Bessie Minnis, Galen W. Graves, both of Riceville; Mrs. Mabel Banks, Harlan, Iowa, and Mrs. Maria Wilkes, Waterloo, Iowa.
When Rachel was about 14 years old, she became a Christian and united with the Methodist church at Stacyville. Later, she was one of the charter members of the David church, and when the family came to Riceville, about 1921, she united with the Baptist church.
Beside the husband and children, she is survived by eleven grandchildren, and one brother, Mr. John Nicholas of McIntire. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church and burial was made in Riceville cemetery.
