Funeral services for Josephine Houg, 89, who died November 15, 1986 at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center, were held Tuesday, November 18 at the First Lutheran church with the Rev. Thomas Hughes officiating.

She was born in Northwood, North Dakota, April 9, 1897, to Peder and Ingeborg (Belgen) Watterud. She was baptized at Washington Lutheran church May 18, 1897 and confirmed at the same church September 21, 1911.

She graduated from Mayville Norman school in 1917 and went to Clermont to teach in the elementary school. There she met and married Elmer Houg.

The family moved to St. Ansgar in 1936 where they were in the grocery business until 1950. She worked in the store and belonged to several organizations in the community including the American Legion Auxiliary, St. Ansgar Woman's Club and First Lutheran Church Women in which she was active for many years. In later years she continued to contribute to others through sewing and child care. She moved to the Good Samaritan Center in 1978.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1960 and her son in 1978.

She is survived by her daughter, Helen of Madison, Wis. and daughter-in-law, Rosella of El Cajon, Calif.; five grandchildren and two great grandsons.

Burial was in First Lutheran cemetery in St. Ansgar.
