at Immanuel LutheranFuneral services for Mrs. Harriet M. Machlan, 72, who died Friday, June 21, 1974, at the Good Samaritan Center here were held Tuesday, June 25 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Reverend Norman Betke officiating.
Harriet Minnie Gutmann was born in St. Ansgar October 8, 1901, the daughter of George and Minnie (Riccius) Gutmann. She was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a lifelong member there.
After graduating from St. Ansgar High School, she attended Iowa State Teacher’s College, Cedar Falls, and was a faculty member in Osceola for a few years. She received her B.A. degree in mathematics from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and taught high school math in Clear lake and Bedford.
On November 28, 1936 she married Olin E. Machlan. They farmed for a few years in the Fairview area near Leon, then moved to a farm near St. Ansgar where they lived for 28 years. One daughter, Neilene, was born to them. In 1968 they retired from the farm and moved to St. Ansgar. Mrs. Machlan became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in May of 1969 and made her home there until her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Olin in 1970; one sister, Esther.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Neilene) Johnson; two grandchildren, Douglas and Dawn Johnson; one sister, Viola Gutmann of St. Ansgar; two brothers, George of Ames and Herman of Cedar Rapids; many nieces and nephews.
Burial was in the St. Ansgar Cemetery with Reverend Betke in charge of the committal services.
