DEATH BY ACCIDENT
C. C. Howe Thrown From a Buggy
Receiving Injury That Caused His Death
After an Unconscious Period of
Over Three Days.
C. C. Howe, one of the old and respected citizens of this place, was the unfortunate victim of an accident last Saturday noon that resulted in his death early yesterday morning without his having regained consciousness.
Mr. Howe had come to town on a matter of personal business. On his way up 7th street he stopped to speak to a friend opposite the city water plant.
After a short conversation he started to drive toward Main St., and had proceeded but a short distance when Mr. Carew turned into the alley back of the telephone office with his automobile. The appearance of the machine caused Mr. Howe's horse to turn suddenly, resulting in his being thrown out of the rig.
It is thought by those who first reached him that his head had struck a stone as the depression on the right side of the skull would indicate. Mr. Howe was carried to the office of Drs. Wiggins & Owen where he received emergency treatment and was afterward taken to his home on south 6th St. He failed to respond to the treatment given and it was thought advisable Monday to trephine through the right frontal bone to relieve the pressure on the brain at that point. The operation revealed a blood clot which was removed but the patient failed to regain consciousness.
In spite of all that medical assistance and careful nursing could do to contribute towards his recovery of consciousness his life ended with the early hours of the morning yesterday.
Christopher C. Howe was born in Steuben county, New York, Jan 26, 1829. He came west at an early age and located in Illinois. He was twice married in Woodstock, Illinois; his first marriage being with Hulda Church; to them were born a daughter, Orpha M. Howe who lived with the father caring for his home since the death of the late Mrs. Howe. His second marriage was with Henrietta M. Goff in 1858, her death occurring Sept. 27, 1903. To this later union were born four children: Egbert R. Howe of South 7th St. and Mrs. Lizzie E. Harris of Cedar Township surviving.
Mr. Howe came to Iowa in 1858, locating on his farm in Lincoln township where the family continued to reside until the death of Mrs. Howe about two years ago. For the past year Mr. and Howe and his daughter Orpha M. have made their on South 6th St., where the funeral will be held tomorrow (Friday) morning at 10 'clock, the services being conducted by Rev. B.C. Preston of the Congregational church. Interment will take place in the Cedar Cemetery near the old farm home.
