Albertena Hyberg was born September 1, 1870, in Darsland, Sweden, the third child of John and Kisa Hyberg. While still in Sweden she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. At the age of 17 years, Albertena came to America with her mother and four sisters and brothers to join her faather and one older sister who had arrived here one year earlier to prepare a home for them on a farm west of Kensett, Iowa.
On March 20, 1897, Albertena was united in marriage to Andrew C. Elverum in the Elk Creek church, west of St. Ansgar. To this union were born five children, Winnie, now Mrs. Neal C. Nielsen of Floyd, Iowa; Clarence, Lewis and Victor, all of Waterloo, Iowa.
Mrs. Elverum spent 28 years of her life in the St. Ansgar and Carpenter communities and seven years in the Bolan community. In the year of 1937 she moved from the farm near Bolan to Waterloo, Iowa, and there spent the remaining three years of her life.
Mrs. Elverum passed away on February 19, 1941 at the age of 70 years, five months and 19 days, just fifteen years after the death of her husband.
She leaves to mourn her passing, one daughter and three sons, also two brothers, Carl Hyberg of Minneapolis, Minn., and Victor Hyberg of Denver, Colorado, also three sisters, Mrs. Ed Ferguson of Spokane, Wash., Miss Agnes Hyberg of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Anna Bentrude of Waterloo, Iowa. There are also five grandchildren.
On Saturday, February 22 at 10 a.m., a prayer service was conducted at the O'Keefe and Towne funeral home. At this service the Rev. Hilmore Cedarholm and the Family Hour quartet sang two songs. The Rev. Ketcham of the Walnut Street Baptist church conducted the service. At 10:30 the funeral procession started for St. Ansgar, Iowa, where the final rites for Mrs. Elverum were held in the Methodist church at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Ketcham and his assistant, Rev. Moffat, of Waterloo were in charge. At this service the Carpenter quartette sang two favorite selections of the deceased. "Out of the Ivory Palaces" and "Good Night Down Here But Good Morning Up There."
The pall bearers were Floyd Cole, George Ruffridge, Harley Kirchgatter, James Seater, Chris Pederson and Lloyd Mowers.
