For sometime before she moved away she conducted a millinary business here. In 1878 she moved to Rockford, where she has since conducted a millinery business and where she was very highly respected. The particulars concerning her death are told in another article in this issue from the Rockford Register. Item #2
On Tuesday evening last, Miss Begertha Benson, a long time resident of this place, engaged in the millinery business, fell down the stairs leading to Maccabees' Hall and suffered a concussion of the brain which resulted in death at 11 a.m. yesterday. It seems that it was the regular meeting night of the Maccabees order and lacking a quorum, Miss Benson had been sent for. Those present in the hall heard a noise as of some heavy body falling, but supposed it was caused by the janitor moving some wood. About an hour later the janitor, Frank Beebe, started to go up to the hall and found the door closed by some obstruction. Investigation showed it to be Miss Benson, who had evidently fallen down the stairs as she was on her way up to the hall.
