Carl was athletically active in high school participating in football and baseball. As he grew older he remained active and best remembered by his family for learning to water ski in his late fifties and continuing the sport until in his late seventies.

He took great pride in his retirement years in maintaining well groomed flower beds and especially enjoyed seeing several hundred tulips in bloom. He was a trustee for a few years at First Lutheran Church and served as a member of the St. Ansgar School Board.

He is survived by his wife, Lola, five children, Charles and wife, Karen and children, Shawn, Pamela and Rodney, St. Ansgar; Kermit and wife, Susan and children, Ryan, Robert, Scott and Rebecca of Fertile; Karla Anderson and husband, Terry and sons, Erick and Kyle of Iowa City; Mary and husband Laird and daughters, Leah, Michal, and Kaitlin of Mason City; John and wife Carmen and son, Jacob of St. Ansgar; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Haugen of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Mrs. Laura Lund of Sunlakes, Arizona.
