SUN CITY WEST, ARIZONA — John C. "Jack" Bailey, 75, died on Wednesday, March 30, 2005, in Sun City West, Arizona, where he has been a resident since retiring there from Iowa in 1997.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Desert Garden United Church.

John C. "Jack" was born on Feb. 27, 1930, to Roy and Dorothy Bailey in Osage. The family later moved to Mason City, where he attended school. He attended the University of Iowa and was a graduate of the Michigan State University Institute of Organization Management and the Academy for Organization Management of the University of Notre Dame. He was a U.S. Air Force Reservist and served on active duty 34 months during the Korean conflict. During his career, he spent 20 years with the Chamber of Commerce of the United States as district manager for the mountain states, and then New York, was manager of the northwest division-Minneapolis and of the southwest region-Dallas. Upon retiring from the U.S. Chamber, he became the president of the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce. He returned to Iowa as the Director of the Department of Economic Development. In 1987, he became president of the Iowa Area Development Group, a multi-faceted business development organization of member-owned electric utilities.

Throughout his career, he served as a member and officer on many significant boards and organizations. He recently completed 16 years on the Board of Directors with Delta Dental Plans of Iowa. In 1973, he was elected mayor of the city of Minnetonka, Minn., and was re-elected for a second term. Prior to retirement, he was a recipient of the International Food and Energy Councils Distinguished Service Award for Added Value Agriculture. Since moving to Arizona, he has served as chairman of the Arizona Winter Visitors Association, president of the Sun City West Kiwanis Club, vice president of the Sun Health Axillary, and president of Sun City's Royal Order of Jesters Billiken Club. He was also a member of Marshall Masonic Lodge No. 108 in Marshalltown, Iowa, Scottish Rite, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and Royal Order of Jesters Court 17. He belonged to the Sun City West Iowa Club and was a member of Desert Garden United Church.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley; daughter, Carolyn and her husband, David; and grandchildren, Sean and Cristin, all of Fort Collins, Colo.; also an brother, Robert J. Bailey, and wife, Colleen in Bellevue, Wash.; sister-in-law, Alice Bailey of Mason City; and many nephews and nieces, all of whom he dearly loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Richard L. Bailey and Dr. Jerry A. Bailey.
