Melburn A. Smalley, age 95, of Osage, Iowa, and formerly of Orchard, Iowa, died on Saturday, April 21, 2001, at the Faith Lutheran Home, Osage.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 25, at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven. Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiated and interment was in the St. Peter Catholic Cemetery, New Haven. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, was in charge of the arrangements.

He was born on December 21, 1905, on the family farm near Orchard, the son of Chester and Mary (Johnson) Smalley. Melburn was united in marriage to Frances Kobliska on November 14, 1933 in Charles City. They farmed the Smalley family farm near Orchard until 1988. In 1998 they moved to Evergreen in Osage.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters; and four brothers.

Those that survive him include his wife, Frances Smalley of Osage; three daughters, Janet Penney and her husband, Greg of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Karen Fox and her husband, Ivo of Orchard and Joyce DuShane and her husband, Neal of Fort Collins, Colorado; one brother, Ralph Smalley of Urbandale; six grandchildren, Debora Miller and her husband, Steven of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Stephen Penney of Minneapolis, Minnesota, John Fox and his wife, Susan of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mike Fox of Mason City, Chuck Fox and his wife, Julynn of Bloomington, Illinois and Dr. Dianna Fox of Indianapolis, Indiana; three great-grandchildren, Dustin and Cody Fox of Bloomington, Illinois and Emma Fox of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
