Herman Dieterichs was born on November 20, 1838 in Berndorf, Waldeck, Germany, and died on September 25, 1932 at the age of 93 years, 10 months and 5 days.

He came to America in 1857 coming to Dubuque, then overland to Mitchell county. He worked for several years on farms near Osage.

Mr. Dieterichs was married to Anna Christine Kneisel, June 12, 1859, and to this union eleven children were born, three of whom died in infancy, and one daughter, Anna Catherine died in 1920.

The family lived on their farm south of Osage for 64 years. After the death of the wife and mother in 1923, Mr. Dieterichs went to live with a daughter, Mrs. William Ahrens [Margaretha Elisabeth], where he was lovingly cared for.

The following children survive: Fred Dieterichs, Mrs. Albert Wilk [Amelia Marie], Henry Dieterichs, William Dieterichs, Carl Dieterichs, Mrs. William Ahrens, and Herman F. Dieterichs. Thirty-five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, also survive him, besides many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Dieterichs was a charter member of the St. John's Lutheran church and was the last of this group. He was an elder in the church for the entire time, fifty-eight years.

NOTES: Herman's real, full name was: Gottfried Friedrich Heinrich Hermann Dieterichs. His father was Carl Friedrich Gustav Dieterichs. His mother was Emilie Karoline Luise Graubner. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Cedar township, Mitchell county, Iowa.
