Verna May died Wednesday (June 5, 1996).

Verna May was born Dec. 10, 1926, in Bottineau, N.D. Her parents were Orrin and Martha (Maertens) Thompson. Verna May grew up in rural St. Ansgar, Iowa. She graduated from Northwood, Iowa, High School in 1944. She attended college and taught elementary school in Iowa as a young woman. On July 13, 1945, she was united in marriage to Myron E. Dobbertin in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Following the death of her daughter, Dawn, Verna May cared for her grandchildren, Jeremie and Philip for the seven years she lived in Clarks Grove.

Verna May was a member of the Salvation Army, the Friendly Handicaps and the Home League. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crafts, especially making rugs, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Penny O'Daffer of Albert Lea; one son, Craig and his wife, Paula Dobbertin of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Jennifer Dobbertin, Kelly Dobbertin, Brandon Dobbertin, Annette (O'Daffer) and her husband, Chris Hansen, Brian O'Daffer, Jeremie Becker and Philip Becker; stepgrandson, Eric Sickenger; sisters, Helen and her husband, Lynn Turbett of Mason City, Iowa; Nancy and her husband, Bill Young of Garner, Iowa; Sharon DeMaris of Mason City, Iowa; and Mavis Fitzgerald of Mason City, Iowa; one brother, Henry O. Thompson and his wife, Joyce, of Doylestown, Pa.; sister-in-law, Marlys Thompson of Mason City, Iowa; former daughter-in-law, Kathy Dobbertin; and many nieces and nephews.

Verna May was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Myron; daughter, Dawn A. Becker; daughter, Naomi in infancy; and brother, Gerald Thompson.

Verna May will be sadly missed by all of her friends and family.
