"Taps" Sounded
for Old Soldier
Tuesday A.M.
Another soldier of the Grand Army of the Republic is gone. Carlos C. Towner passed away sometime before morning on Tuesday, November 6, The old gentleman had been in rather poor health for some time, ever since a severe sickness endured several months ago, but had been around as usual,cheerful and bouyant. Monday he spent as usual. Tuesday morning he was found dead in his bed.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon from the W. J. Towner home at 2 o'clock.
Mr. Towner was one of the old settlers in Mitchell county, having been here nearly half a century. He was a well-known man and universally high esteemed. His obituary as follows:
Carlos Chadwich Towner was born at Casleton, Vt. Jan 11, 1840. He came west to Libertyville, Ill, with his father's family in 1854. At the age of 22, he enlisted in the 96th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to corporal Oct. 31, 1864. Had three bullets through his coat at Rocky Face Ridge, Ga., where the enemy got so close to some of the company on the skirmish line as to order their surrender.
He threw down his gun for the purpose but changed his mind and ran, succeeding in making his escape; had bullet through his coat at the battle of Nashville, Tenn., was absent four weeks in the hospital, thus escaping the battle of Chichamuga, and with that exception he was with the company in every engagment in which it took part.
June, the 7th, 1868, he was married at Lake Forest, Ill, to Nettie K. Hall, and the following spring he and his bride came to Mitchell county and located on a farm in the southeastern part of Mitchell county, where they remained for ten years, at which time they moved to Osage, where he resided until the time of his death. He is survived by five children; William J. Towner and Mrs Garfield Moody, of Osage; Mrs. Eugene Holbrook and Jay T. Towner of Charles City, and Mrs. Howard Ober, of Pipestone, Minn. all of whom were permitted to be here.
He also leaves nine grandchildren to mourn his loss.
He was deeply interested in the present world's conflict, and often expressed a desire to live to see the end of it.
He passed away Nov. 6, 1917.
