BURNS TO DEATH ATTEMPTING TO RESCUE FURNITURE AT FIRE
FUNERAL SERVICES CONDUCTED AT ROCK CREEK LUTHERAN CHURCH, ROCK CREEK, IOWA MONDAY AFTERNOON
Trapped by flames or overcame by smoke, Emil Buehrer, 58, of Swanville, Minnesota was burned to death in his attempt to remove furniture from the home of Carl Buehrer, one mile east of Grafton, as it was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning. The fire had made considerable headway before it was discovered and other occupants of the house narrowly escaped.
Emil Buehrer, who occupied one of the rooms on the second floor, was seen by members of the family and neighbors as he worked to save some of the furniture. He came to one of the windows and tossed out some bedding and then turned back, evidently to get more furnishings. He was not seen again.
The body was found in the ruins. The arms and legs were burned off. The body was lying near the foundation inside the house, indicating that he died near a wall of the house. Since he was working near a window, it is not believed that he was overcome by the smoke and it is thought that the floor fell in.
The fire was discovered by Carl and he called to Lawrence Gates, who is employed on the farm. Mr. Carl Buehrer, who has been ill for some time, had just recently returned from Rochester where he had been receiving treatment. His foot was in a cast and he made his escape from the building on crutches. Muriel Buehrer, 21, a daughter of Carl, was asleep upstairs and she put on a pair of coveralls and attempted to make her way down the stairs but she was overcome by smoke and Lawrence Gates carried her out through an upstairs window. Gladys Buehrer, 25, another daughter, who was also sleeping upstairs, wrapped herself in a sheet and escaped down the stairs. Eldon Buehrer, 10, a son of Carl, was sleeping downstairs and he escaped without difficulty. Muriel had her hair singed but the others escaped without injury.
The origin of the fire is unknown. It is believed that it started in the summer kitchen about 12:30 o'clock. A few neighbors came soon after the discovery but it was impossible to enter the building. Carl attempted to enter the house to save his brother but he was restrained by the children and neighbors. The Grafton fire department arrived a few minutes later but the fire was out of control and so the department worked to save the nearby buildings.
Funeral services for Emil Buehrer were conducted at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church Monday afternoon, Rev. C. Kumpf officiating. The body was brought to St. Ansgar following the services and early Tuesday morning it was taken to Swanville, Minnesota where services were held in the afternoon and burial made in the cemetery there.
Mr. Buehrer is survived by 3 children, two daughters and a son, who live in Minnesota. Emil was a frequent visitor at the home of his brother Carl and had been there the past two weeks.
