Thorne Richards Funeral Rites Conducted Here

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, in the Reid Funeral Chapel for Thorne E. Richards who died Wednesday, August 4, [1954] at a Council Bluffs hospital. The Rev. H.G. Parker officiated.

Music was furnished by Miss Muriel McPherron as soloist and Miss Shirley Balwin, accompanist. Selections were "The Lord's Prayer" and "In the Garden."

Casket bearers were Albert Batten, Richard Hosford, B. N. Maxwell, Carl Morgan, Ben Stille and Kermit Hillyer.

Flower ladies were Mrs. Cham Cowardin, Mrs. B. N. Maxwell, Mrs. Ben Stille, Mrs. William Slezak, Mrs. William Lugsch Sr., and Mrs. Carl Morgan.

Burial was in Glenwood cemetery.

Thorne Elvin Richards was born in Glenwood August 3 1881. The son of Milton and Caroline Richards. He attended Glenwood Public Schools.

As a young man he served as pharmacists' assistant in several drug stores in Glenwood.

In 1904 he married Marie Miller. Two years later they moved to Paonia, Colorado, living there and at Sterling for some time. At a later date they moved to Aberdeen, Washington, where for 23 years he owned and operated a successful book store; after selling it he moved to Seattle, Washington where his wife died two years later.

Two daughters, Mrs George Weeks of Seattle, Washington and Mrs. Burtis Smith, New Castle, Delaware; one son, Leonard B. Richards, Benton City, Washington, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren and one sister Mrs. Josephine McCoy with several nieces and nephews live in and near Glenwood. They with his wife, Mrs. Della Richards, of Glenwood, survive him.

When a youth he united with the Latter Day Saints church. He was a charter member of the Concord Masonic lodge of Tacoma, Washington.

Since living in Glenwood he became interested in the hobby of wood working which he enjoyed doing.
