Chester Meredith, 86, Glenwood

Chester Roy Meredith, 86, died Dec. 23, 2005, at the Glen Haven Home in Glenwood. Funeral services were held Dec. 27, 2005, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Glenwood. Pastor Dennis Maaske officiated the service. Interment was at the Glenwood Cemetery with military honors by Glenwood American Legion Post No. 1044, United States Marine Corp.

Mr. Meredith, one of five children of William and Lillie M. (Ross) Meredith, was born at his parent's home in Glenwood on Dec. 16, 1919. He grew up in Glenwood and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1937. Following school, he worked as the parts man and bookkeeper for the Hiatt Ford Motor Company in Glenwood.

On March 3, 1940, Chet and Mary Elizabeth Clapper were married at the Methodist parsonage in Pacific Junction. They made their home in Glenwood and were blessed with four children, Don, Dick, Dean, and Deborah. On June 27, 1944, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he served as a corporal with the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific Theatre of WWII. He was discharged in April of 1946 and returned home to Glenwood. He worked for a brief time at the Hiatt garage and then as the projectionist at the Powers Theatre in Glenwood. The family became members of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Glenwood where he was baptized and confirmed on Aug. 6, 1950.

In 1955, he began working on the receiving dock for the Wright & Wilhelmy Company, a wholesale hardware and sporting goods business located in Omaha, Neb. He soon became a buyer for the company and worked until his retirement in 1981. He was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he held numerous offices including elder and treasurer. He was a member of the Glenwood American Legion Post No. 1044, and enjoyed his daily coffee with friends at the senior center. In November of 2005, his health forced him to move to the Glen Haven Home.

Mr. Meredith was preceded in death by his infant son, Gary Lee in 1940; his parents; and his sisters, Grace Stickland, Pearl Black, and Darlene Thomas. He is survived by his wife, Mary Meredith of Glenwood; sons, Don Meredith and wife Karen; Dick Meredith and wife Denise all of Omaha, and Dean Meredith and wife Judy of Glenwood; daughter Deborah Hopp and husband Dave of Glenwood; sister Helen Hunt and husband La Vern of Bellevue, Neb.; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Hertz Funeral Home in Glenwood was in charge of arrangements.
