Richard L. Leet, 79, Glenwood

Richard L. Leet, 79, of Glenwood, died Dec. 12, 2005, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. Funeral services were held, Dec. 15, 2005, at Peterson Mortuary in Glenwood. Pastor Steve Frazee and Dr. Arnold Peterson officiated the service. Burial was at the Silver City Cemetery.

Mr. Leet was born on a farm near Glenwood to Tom and Wilda (Wickersham) Leet on Feb. 26, 1926. He attended Glenwood schools and served in the U.S. Nay during WW11 on the submarines aboard the U.S.S. Trumpetfish. After the war was over, he was on Trumpetfish, which was one of the boats that chartered the waters around Alaska. He was stationed in Alaska and Hawaii.

On June 29, 1947, he married Jeanne Hayes in Silver City. He attended Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Ill., and worked for John Deere Co. as a service representative for 37 years, with territories in western Iowa. He was later transferred to Springfield, Ill., where he serviced the territory across Illinois.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Glenwood and the First United Methodist Church in Springfield. When he retired, he moved back to Glenwood and returned to the First Baptist Church, which he dearly loved. He served as a trustee for the church for several years and belonged to the American Legion post in Council Bluffs for several years as well.

His favorite things to do were square dancing, fishing, hunting, camping and after retiring he joined several bicycle clubs and rode Ragbraii twice, Ohio and Louisiana one time each. He belonged to several camping clubs while living in Illinois. After moving to Glenwood he loved mowing lawns with his lawn tractor and building wood projects with Lyle Hanson. He enjoyed visiting with his family and friends and had a special companion in his little dog Reilly, who loved to go riding and run errands with him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Delbert, John, Verle and Walter; and nephews, Franklin and Bill Leet.

Survivors include his wife Jeanne of Glenwood; son, Rick and wife Terry Leet of Silver City; sisters, Betty Powers of Phoenix, Ariz.; Ginnie Rhode of Glenwood; Rose and husband Duane Kahl of Glenwood; brother Lyle and wife Kathleen Leet of North Platte, Neb.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or Calvary Baptist Church in Glenwood. Peterson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
