Former Malvern Resident Dead

C. L. Wiatt, Born on Old Homestead North of Malvern in 1854, Died at Home of Daughter in Arkansas-- Services in Malvern Aug. 11.

Columbus Lafayette Wiatt was born at the old Wiatt homestead four and one-half miles north of Malvern on September 25, 1854, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Alva Parkhurst in Van Buren, Ark., Aug. 8, 1923, at the age of 68 years, 10 months and 14 days. He was the eighth child of a family of twelve, consisting of seven girls and five boys, of which one brother, John G. Wiatt of Council Bluffs, and four sisters, Mrs. Jane Kelley and Mrs. M. P. Byrd both of Omaha, Mrs. Adelia Hamilton of Berwyn, Ill., and Mrs. Ella Pierson of Henderson, Ia., are still living.

He grew to manhood in the vicinity where he was born and on September 9, 1877, was united in marriage to Martha Robinson whose father was then pastor at East Liberty. To this union were born two children, a son and daughter, the son, Gilbert, dying in infancy. Also an adopted son, Everett, who died about two years ago.

He farmed the home place until the year 1889, when with his family he moved to Hamburg where he was engaged in the lumber business. In the year 1906 he moved to Kansas and was engaged in the lumber and grain business until 1916, when he entered the postal service at Gore, Okla., continuing in this position until 1922 when on account of failing health he was forced to resign, since which time he had made his home with his daughter in Van Buren, Ark.

He Leaves to mourn his departure, his daughter, Mrs. Valda Parkhurst, and granddaughter, Mildred; one brother, four sisters, and hosts of friends. He was a member of the South M. E. church at Gore, Okla.

The body was brought to Malvern and on Saturday afternoon the funeral services were hald from the East Liberty church, conducted by Rev. Walter C. Plank. Burial was made in the East Liberty Cemetery.
