Last Rites Held For Arthur Smith
Emerson Farmer Passed Away in Red Oak Hospital

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, March 25, at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church for Arthur Smith, Rev. L.M. Grigsby was in charge of the services. Pallbearers were W.L. Honeyman, Glen Shook, Marion DeBolt, A.A. Darby, Odes Hall and W.V. Morrison. Mrs. Will Oliver and Mrs. A.F. Smith were in charge of the floral offerings. The singers were Mrs. J.A. Thorson, Mrs. Hebe Edie, Frederick Larson and R.R. Honeyman. They were accompanied by Mrs. R.R. Honeyman on the organ.

The body lay in state at the church from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.

The following obituary was read:

John Arthur Smith was born at Emerson, Dec. 16, 1885, and passed away March 22, 1942, aged 56 years, three months and nine days. He was the son of James and Harriet Smith. His mother passed away in 1915 and his father in 1933. He received his education in the public schools of Emerson and after graduation from the high school he took up farming and continued in this occupation in the same neighborhood until his death.

He had been in poor health for some months past but lately was thought to be improving. Death came to him swiftly. He was taken suddenly ill about 12 o'clock Saturday night and he was taken to the Murphy hospital in Red Oak where he died at 10 p.m. Sunday as a result of blood poisoning.

In 1910 he was united in marriage with Mary M. Hodge. Two children were born to this union, Mrs. Mae Slagle of Omaha and Clyde E. Smith who has been called into the U.S. army. He is survived also by one brother, Ray Smith, of Graff, Mo.

Mr. Smith was a devoted father, a good neighbor and a respected citizen.

Burial was in the Emerson cemetery with the Comer Funeral Home in charge.
