Honor memory of James C. Spidell

Highly Respected Resident of Pacific Junction Passed Away at Age 72. Funeral Services Held Monday Afternoon.

James Calvin Spidell, youngest son of John and Margaret Spidell, both pioneer residents of southwestern Iowa, was born in McPaul, on March 29, 1869. His early manhood was spent in Bartlett, where he was united in marriage September 2, 1896 with Bertha Florence Shuffler, who survives him.

To this union were born seven sons and four daughters. Three sons and one daughter preceded him in death. Surviving children are: Glen, Aurora, Ill., Fay, Plattsmouth, Neb., Franklin, Woodstock, Ill., Dale, residing at home, Mrs. Milo Brink, Creston, Mrs. D.R. Miner, Omaha, Neb., and Mrs. Harold Campbell, Prescott, Ia.; also several grandsons and granddaughters and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Sarah Shuffler.

Mr. Spidell had resided in Pacific Junction during the past 41 years and until recent years was employed on the Burlington railroad. He was a member of the Methodist church for a number of years. He was always a very devoted husband and father in every respect.

Although in failing health for some time, he attempted to continue his regular duties until forced to undergo treatment the early part of June, since which time he had been confined in the Jennie Edmundson hospital and in his home, where he passed away July 19, at the age of 72 years, three months and 21 days.

The memory of this kind man will linger long in the hearts of all who knew him, for he never missed an opportunity to help others, speaking words of encouragement and lending a helping hand to those in need.

The large number who attended the funeral services which were held in the Methodist church in Pacific Junction Monday afternoon and the abundance of floral tributes bespoke the respect and esteem in which he was held. The services, which were directed by the Raynor funeral home of Glenwood, were conducted by Rev. George Durkee, assisted by Rev. Ralph Fagan, both of Pacific Junction, and Rev. Charles Aitken of Bartlett. Music for the service was furnished by Mrs. Frank Boyle and Mrs. Shirley Lincoln, Sr. Ladies in charge of the floral offerings were Mrs. Ray Harper, Mrs. John Hunter, Mrs. Allen Watts and Mrs. Wilcox. Pallbearers were Charles Williams, Oscar Hiatt, Pete Colgan, Harry Russell, Edd Colgan and Frank Mullica.

The body was laid to rest in the Glenwood cemetery.
