Another Pioneer Is Laid To Rest

Ellen Doyle Thomas, Born on Old Doyle Homestead Southeast of Glenwood, Passes at Age of Ninety.

Ellen Doyle, daughter of Adam and Sarah Doyle, was born May 24, 1852, and grew to womanhood on the old Doyle homestead southeast of Glenwood.

On October 9, 1872, she was united in marriage to Edward C. Thomas. To this union, one son was born, Charles R., who passed away at the age of 13 years. The death of this boy meant a great change in the home and in the lives of the parents. They then united with the Church of Christ.

In 1882 they purchased a farm in the Hillsdale community and made that their home until the death of "Uncle Eddie," as he was familiarly known, on May 11, 1923.

Aunt Ellen had been in frail health since 1913 when their team ran away causing severe injury to her. She passed away in Clarinda, Iowa, July 14, 1942, at the age of 90 years, 1 month and 20 days.

She leaves to mourn her passing several nieces and nephews: Fay Doyle of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Grace Doyle Gjertsen of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Bertha Doyle Lemmon of Houston, Texas, Mrs. Nelle Doyle Scott of Austin, Tex., Mrs. Vern Doyle Ling, Lmaberton, Minn., Mrs. Maude Schnick of Scotts Bluff, Nebr., Edd Pattersen, Tabor; Elmer Pattersen, Red Oak; Kirt Pattersen, Montebello, Calif.; A.R. Brenton, Glenwood.

The funeral services were held in Raynor Chapel in Glenwood on Thursday afternoon, July 16, with the Rev. E.E. Goodrich of Glenwood, a long time friend of the family, officiating.

Music for the service was furnished by Mrs. Fred Reasoner and Mrs. Parl Mickelwait with Mrs. Mary Sawyers at the piano.

Those who acted as pallbearers were Steve Criswell, Frank Plumb, C.R. Warren, J. Kersch, A.H. Culver and N.C. Reasoner.

The body was laid to rest in the Hillsdale cemetery.
