Former Mayor of Red Oak Passes
F.A. Smith Passed Away at the Home of His Daughter Mrs. H.C. Daniel in Glenwood. Funeral in Red Oak.

Red Oak merchant for nearly half a century, mayor of that city for two terms and a longtime city councilman, F.A. Smith died last Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Homer C. Daniel, in Glenwood. He would have been 83 on August 23rd.

Mr. Smith and his family became residents of Red Oak 50 years ago, coming from Sigourney, and with his brother, Ed M. Smith, went into the retail meat, grocery and produce business successively. They built a wide acquaintance throughout this territory. Shortly after Mrs. Smith died in 1938, he and his brother retired, since which time he has been living with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Daniel in Glenwood, and with another son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. N.B. Wilson, in Mediapolis. Other immediate survivors is the son, Edward B. Smith, newspaperman of Knoxville, Tenn. All were present at the funeral service Sunday as were also N.B. Wilson, Jr., of West Liberty, a grandson, and Mrs. Fulton Nimocks of Ottumwa, a granddaughter.

Funeral services were held at Perryman's chapel in Red Oak Sunday afternoon, with Miss Sarah Palmer, Christian Scientist, officiating. Robert Dean of Glenwood furnished two vocal numbers. Masonic services were held in Evergreen cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert Reiley, Howard Brannock, John Johnson, Alfred Nelson, Don Allen and Lyle McCormick, all of Red Oak.

Attending the service from Glenwood were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dean, Miss Nell Bogart, Miss Evelyn Berard, Miss Etta Ewing, Mesdames A.S. Workman, Elisa Jones, F.M. McCluskey, F.J. Wallace, Carl Cook, T.J. Holliday, Sam Estes and Scott Robinson.
