May 8, 1941Funeral services were held in the Silver City Methodist church Wednesday afternoon for Claude Brooks, 61, well known Mills county farmer, whose sudden death late Monday came as a distinct shock to relatives and friends alike.
He had been ill only a few days and had been taken only that morning to a Council Bluffs hospital for treatment for pneumonia.Claude was born June 1, 1879, and grew to young manhood on the farm of Mr. and Mrs. George Brooks, in the community where he resided throughout his entire life. He received his education in the schools of that community.
He was united in marriage to Cleva Graham on Sept. 4, 1907, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.B.Judson, with whom she resided. They established their home on a farm south of Silver City where they resided at the time of his death. His wife and one daughter, Mrs. Irene McManigal survive him.
He was a member of the I.0.0.F. and Masonic lodges of Silver City, the Knights Templar of Council Bluffs and the Consistory in Des Moines, being a Thirty-second degree Mason. He was a member of the Silver City Methodist church.
The funeral service was conducted by his former pastor, Rev. Peter Jacobs, now of Tabor, assisted by Rev. George Hall, present Silver City pastor.
Friends and relatives filled the auditorium of the church and overflowed into the balcony as the final tribute was paid to his memory. The flowers were many and beautiful, and were arranged by Mrs. Joe Wilcox, Mrs. Dan Markel, Mrs. Chris Wriedt, Mrs. Edd Gilbert, Mrs. Charley Coffey and Mrs. Glenn Skerritt. Miss JaniCe Hays, Glenn Skerritt and R.P. Galt sang two selections, and Marlin Richardson sang "Going Down the Valley.” Both were accompanied by Mrs. F. P.Galt.
Pallbearers were Dan Markel, L.L. Richardson, Guy Custer, C.A. Moore, Edd Gilbert and Charley Coffey. Members of the Masonic Lodge formed a guard of honor.
Interment was at East Liberty cemetery, with services at the grave conducted by the Masonic Lodge. The Raynor Funeral home of Glenwood was in charge of the services.
