Funeral Services for George A. Sawyer

Father of Mrs. C.E. Hilton Died at Home in Corwith

Funeral services for George A. Sawyer, the father of Mrs. C.E. Hilton of Malvern, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church with the Rev. Paul H. Hicks officiating. Mr. Sawyer, who has made his home for several years at Corwith, died there Saturday afternoon.

Short services were held at the home in Corwith Sunday afternoon, and the body was brought to Malvern for burial.

A quartet, R.W. Criswell, J.R. McClymound, Mrs. L.A. Talbott, and Mrs. F.R. Chantry, accompanied by Mrs. J.W. Baer, sang several of Mr. Sawyer’s favorite hymns during the services Tuesday afternoon, eulogizing Mr. Sawyer’s life and ideals, and read the following obituary:

George Adelbert Sawyer, son of Caleb A. and Clarissa Sawyer, was born near Janesville, Wis., Nov. 7, 1844.

(not legible) . . . of eight years he moved to Winneshiek county, Iowa. There he grew to manhood. During the Civil war he enlisted in company K, 35th Infantry, and served to the end of the war. On Sept. 16, 1868, he was united in marriage to Mary E. George at West Union.

To this union eight children were born - six sons and two daughters - all of whom survive him. His wife died July 10, 1909.

On June 25, 1915 he was again married to Miss Jenney June Johnson who survives. Their home has since been in Corwith.

Mr. Sawyer united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1888 at Davey, Nebr. and continued a loyal and faithful Christian. He has also been a member of the Masonic order for sixty years. He believed in brotherhood and has always manifested that spirit.

He was stricken Sunday night, Nov 18, and remained unconscious until Saturday afternoon, Nov. 24, when he quietly passed away.

He is survived by his children; George of Long Beach, Calif;, Ray of Claremont, Calif., Myron of Fresco, Calif., Dr. Roy of Lincoln, Nebr., James of Maryville, Mo., Herbert of Des Moines, Mrs. Ethel Clark of Deerfield, M.J., and Mrs. Bertha Hilton of Malvern.

Three of Mr. Sawyer’s sons, Dr. Roy, James and Herbert, attended the services in Malvern and with Walter Hilton, C.E. Hilton, and George Hilton, acted as pallbearers.

Interment was made in the Malvern cemetery.
