Helen Clara Kahl, 88, of Malvern, died Jan 6 2005 at her home. Funeral services were held Jan. 10 at the Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home in Malvern. Rev. Mike Sands officiated the services Interment was at the Mineola Cemetery.

Mrs Kahl was the daughter of Fred and Martha (Hoeck) Dittman born May 14, 1916 at her parents farm near Emerson, Neb. She grew up in Emerson and attended country school through the eighth grade. Following school, she continued to live and work with her parents on the farm. While visiting relatives in Mineola, she met William Albert Kahl. They were married at St. John Lutheran Church in Mineola on June 30, 1934. They made their home farming in Mills County. Their marriage was blessed with seven children. Mrs. Kahl enjoyed the farm and her role as homemaker. She cared for the chickens, milked the cows and was an avid cook and baker. In 1968, Mr. and Mrs. Kahl moved to Malvern. Mrs. Kahl worked as a nurse’s aide and cook at the Nishna Cottage Care Center. She thought of the care center residents as a second family. Mr. and Mrs. Kahl had been married 53 years when Mr. Kahl died on Oct. 10, 1987. Mrs. Kahl continued to live at home and later worked making donuts at Casey’s General Store, starting her work day at 4 am. each morning She enjoyed sewing and crafts. She was a tremendous baker whose homemade rye bread was enjoyed by many. She liked all flowers especially daisies and loved to spend time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Kahl was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, one sister and five grandchildren. She is survived by sons Harvey Kahl of Cullmann, Ala., and William Kahl and wife Delores of Crescent; daughters Betty Williams of Little Rock, Ark., Elaine Knight, Janna Brammer and Linda Michael, all of Council Bluffs, and Susan Sands and husband Mike of Kansas City, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister Gladys Rohde of Allen, Neb.; sisters-in-law Dorothy Kahl of Council Bluffs and Arzetta Dittman of Emerson, Neb.; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends,

Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
