Josephine (Jo) Van Scyoc, 88, of Tabor, died Jan. 6, 2005, at her home. A Celebration Worship Service was held Jan. 10 at the Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor. Rev. Rod Van Wey and Rev. Don Maynard officiated the service. Interment was at the Tabor Cemetery.

Mrs. Van Scyoc was the daughter of Earl and Alma (Cary) Brattain, born March 19, 1916, in Griswold. She graduated from Griswold High School in 1933 and, as a teenager, went to work entertaining over KFNF radio in Shenandoah, playing guitar and singing. She then moved to Council Bluffs with her parents. At that time, she worked in an office in the federal building there. She was united in marriage to Lyle Van Scyoc on Jan. 6, 1942, in Papillion, Neb. To this union two children were born. She worked for many years as a secretary at the Glenwood State Hospital-School, then many more years as deputy treasurer in the auto department of the Fremont County treasurer’s office at the courthouse in Sidney. She was a born again Christian and recommitted her life to Jesus Christ on July 4, 1971. She so enjoyed being a part of the Bartlett Bible study for several years. In years past, she and her daughter sang gospel music concerts. She dearly loved Jesus, and her faith grew awesomely stronger in her last days here in the midst of the painful struggle. She received her Ultimate Healing on Jan. 6, 2005, and went Home to Heaven. Friends have recalled her gentle touch, her smile, her angelic face and her beautiful prayers.

Mrs. Van Scyoc was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers. She is survived by children Gary (Doc) and Patricia Jo; brother Bob Brattain of Council Bluffs; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Memorials are suggested to Tabor Rescue Squad or the Grape Community Hospital Foundation.

Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
