Mary Elaine Curtis, 89, of Strahan, died Dec. 18, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Red Oak. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 22, 10 a.m., at the Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home in Malvern. Pastor David Kim will officiate the services. Interment will be at the Malvern Cemetery.

Mrs. Curtis was the daughter of Joseph Henry and Sarah May (Foxworthy) Churchman, born Feb. 14, 1915, near Northboro. As a young child, she moved with her family to the Strahan / Randolph area. She graduated from the Strahan Consolidated High School with the class of 1933. She married Virgil Wayne Curtis on Sept. 23, 1933, in Corning. They made their home west of Strahan and were blessed with three children. Mrs. Curtis enjoyed her role as a homemaker and mother and was always active in her church and community. She was a member of the Strahan United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Women’s Society of Christian Service. She was also a member of the Social County Dozen Club and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a cook at the Strahan School and always enjoyed being around young people. Her skills in the kitchen were known far and wide, and she was artistically talented. She had a strong interest in painting and was a gifted seamstress. She created beautiful handwork and crocheting until her eyes became affected by macular degeneration. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis had been married 67 years when Mr. Curtis died on Nov. 25, 2000. Mrs. Curtis continued to live at her home. In the years following her husband’s death, she began to struggle with Alzheimer’s and eventually moved to the Good Samaritan Center. Mrs. Curtis was always ready with a helping hand. She was a dear sweet lady and a great mother, grandmother and loyal friend who will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Curtis was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant daughter Donna Curtis; sisters Bessie Anderson, Ollie Bateman, Hattie Trively and Gladys Young: and brothers Arthur Churchman, Coy Churchman and Ernest Churchman. She is survived by children Larry Ronald Curtis and wife Patricia of Hastings and Sharon Foss and husband David of Tucson, Ariz.; brother-in-law Lowell Curtis and wife Kathryn of Malvern; sister-in-law Ileiselotte Curtis of Emerson; grandchildren Debora Frazee and husband William of Emerson, Dennis Curtis and wife Kim of St. Charles, Mo., Vicki Wulf and husband David of Omaha, Neb., Scott Foss of Tucson and Tanya Foss Pritchard and husband David of Dresden, Germany; eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Strahan United Methodist Church and the Alzheimer’s Foundation. Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
