Valentine Shuffler of Pacific Junction, was born in Indiana August 16, 1853. He died at his home about 4 a.m. February 1, 1916 at the age of 62 years, 5 months, and 15 days. When seven years of age his parents moved to Iowa and settled on a farm near Thurman. January 1, 1900, he moved with his family to Pacific Junction.
Feb. 17, 1874 he was united in marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Hatcher. To this union eleven children, five sons and six daughters were born. Two sons and one daughter, Arthur and Mary preceded their father in death. Of the survivors the sons are F.B., James, Ray, and Leonard; the daughters are Mrs. Ruth Briles, of Chester, Nebraska; Mrs. Bertha Spidell, Pacific Junction; Mrs. Rose Coster, Percival, Iowa; Mrs. Jessie Lilly, Omaha; Mrs. Mable Collins, Elliott, Ia. Two sisters survive- Mrs. W. E. Beford of Chappell, Nebraska; Mrs. Robert James of Bellvillo, Kansas. He had no brothers, beside these twenty-seven grandchildren mourn his death.
His death was not unexpected, since he was afflicted with cancer of the stomach. Two years ago this month he was called from his work at the roundhouse by the illness which held him in it’s grip until released by death. For months and weeks he had been gradually sinking away, so that where death did steal over his wasted frame, one long breath indicated he had answered the final summons of man.
Funeral Services were held at the M. E. church on Wednesday Feb.,1 at 1 p.m. and burial was in the Glenwood cemetery. The IOOF order had charge of the services at the grave.
Those present at the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Collins of Elliott; Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Lilly and family of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Coster and family of Percival; and Mrs. W. C. Bedford of Chappell, Nebraska
