April 2, 1907

Sam DeBolt, an old settler and well-known farmer living west of Henderson, died suddenly at his home last Thursday afternoon.

Although he has been somewhat poorly for some months past he seemed in his usual health Thursday. He had been out in the field where his boys were plowing. Returning to the house he had scarcely sat down in a chair till he fell over and died before assistance could be rendered.

He was an unusually large and fleshy man and weighed at the time of his death about 350 pounds, or twice the weight of an average man.

The funeral was held at Wesley Chapel at 2 o’clock Saturday and was conducted by Rev. M.R. Tally of Hastings, burial being made in the adjoining cemetery.

The deceased was 63 years of age and had lived in Mills County upwards of 38 years. He is survived by a wife, seven children, two brothers and four sisters.

Of the children all live at or near the home place except one daughter, Mrs. C.W. Cooksey of Erickson, Neb. The two other daughters are Mrs. Elmer Sowers and Mrs. Edward Sowers. The four sons are Fred, Lester, Clarence and Harry.

Gideon DeBolt, a brother, lives at Macedonia, and of the two sisters, Mrs. John Worstall lives at Malvern and Mrs. Rebecca Kellar at Carson.

The other brother George DeBolt, resides in Indiana. Two sisters Mrs. Jane Lovitt and Mrs. Nancy Parr live in Illinois.

The deceased was born Feb. 12, 1843, in Licking County, Ohio; moved to Henderson County, Illinois, in 1863, and to Mills County in 1868.

He was married Feb. 13, 1867, to Miss Sidney A. Cooksey. To them were born ten children, three preceding him to a better land.

The wife and children desire to return thanks for the kind assistance of friends in their hour of sorrow.

"Note He had another brother John Henry Debolt who had died 1 May 1901 in Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co., California."
