Frances Helen Scheel, 87, of Council Bluffs, formerly of Mineola, died Oct. 14, 2004, at the Woodlands Rehabilitation Center in Council Bluffs. Funeral services were held Oct. 20, 2004 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Mineola. Rev. Stephanie Sanborn officiated the services. Interment was at the Mineola Cemetery.

Mrs. Scheel was the daughter of Ferdinand Karl and Meta Minna Magdalena (Kruse) Miller, born Oct. 21, 1916, on the family farm south of Mineola. She worked along side her eight sisters on the farm and attended the Everham Country School through the eighth grade. On Dec. 14, 1937, she married Donald Scheel at her parent’s Mills County home. They made their home in Mineola and were blessed with two daughters. Mrs. Scheel enjoyed being a farm wife and doing bookwork for her husband’s radio, TV, appliance sales and service business. The couple had been married for 38 years when Mr. Scheel died on Aug. 23, 1975. Mrs. Scheel continued to live at her Mineola home until July 1999, when her health forced her to move to the Bethany Lutheran Home. Mrs. Scheel was a lifetime member of the the St. John Lutheran Church, where she enjoyed an active role in the quilting group and Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the neighborhood women’s club. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery work, reading and sharing stories about farm life.

Mrs. Scheel was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Emil Miller and sisters Eunice Miller, Leona Schoening and Lillie Scheel. She is survived by daughters Jeannette Rath and husband Darrell of Treynor and Connie Vanecek and husband Robert of Council Bluffs; sisters Alma Leu of Hastings, Arlene Scheel, Marvel Kruse and Alice Rohrberg, all of Glenwood, and Linda Deacon of Creston; five grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Hospice Preferred Choice, 508 E. Broadway, Council Bluffs, Iowa 51503. Hertz Funeral Home in Glenwood was in charge of arrangements.
