Samuel W Hinton - - Another pioneer of Mills county was laid to rest on Sunday in the Hillsdale cemetery. Samuel W Hinton, who for many years resided south of Hillsdale, and afterwards west of Glenwod, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.P. Rheam, of 2535 Avenue in Council Bluffs, Thursday, October 15, after an illness of 3 weeks.

His death was hastened somewhat as the result of an accident last June at Carbon, Iowa, which resulted in two broken ribs. He bore his suffering without complaint, and was ever cheerful. He was living with a widowed sister at the time of his accident.

Samuel Hinton was born in Rushville, Indiana, in 1834. He joined the Union army in his native state and served through the entire war, reaching the rank sergeant, and never received a wound, though he was in numerous battles. Soon after the close of the war the family moved to Mills county. He is survived by three daughters and one son; Mrs. Alice Evans of Glenwood, Mrs. C.E. Henry and J.P. Rheam of Council Bluffs, and C.M. Hinton of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Mrs. Hinton died in Glenwood about 12 years ago and is buried in the HIllsdale cemetery. Mr.and Mrs. Hinton were pillars of the M.E. church at Hillsdale and Mr. Hinton was a member of the G.A.R. Post of Glenwood.

The funeral services were at the M.E. church on Sunday, October 18. All of the children and grandchildren were present at the funeral, also a half brother, George Homan, of Plattsmouth, and a nephew, Samuel Hinton, of Corning. It is a pleasure to record that his sons-in-law spoke of Mr. Hinton as one whom they loved as a father. Those neighbors who knew him best loved him most. Rev. Stevenson conducted the funeral service.

NOTE: Samuel served with Co B 43rd Indiana Infantry.
