The home of John and Sam Steiner, three miles southwest of Elgin, the two Steiners, in company with Andy Hunsbarger and a barrel of wine, were having a jolly good time. Everything moved along smoothly until the three had filled up on the liquor and had retired for the night. They they began to quarrel and one after another got up and continued the drinking and quarreling. Between 9 and 10 John Steiner had worked himself into such a frenzy that he got the gun and shot his brother death.
