Joseph Benjamin Viner, a pioneer of the east side of Mills County and a well known resident of this place passed away at his home Thursday, December 12, following an illness of almost a year.
Mr. Viner was well known over the east side of the county having resided in Deer Creek out west of Emerson for a number of years previous to moving to the fine farm he owned south east of Henderson for a number of years. For the past few years he has resided in Henderson
Funeral services were held from the late home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 and were conducted by Rev. J E. Wilkins of the First Baptist Church of Emerson. A special choir, Messrs Claude Wilson and T. D. Phillips and Mesdames J. G. Loving, Wm, Workman, George Wilson, and T. D. Phillips sang. The remains were laid to rest in the Henderson Cemetery. The following is the obituary:
Joseph Benjamin Viner was born February 8, 1852, at Frome, Somersetshire, England, and died December 12, 1918, at his home in Henderson, Iowa.
He sailed for America in the year of 1872, locating at Burlington, Iowa.
In the year of 1873, on June 9th, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Pring. To this union six children were born.
In the year of 1881, he located in Mills County, near Hastings, Iowa. In 1892 he moved to a farm near Henderson, Iowa. He returned in the year of 1909 to his home in Henderson.
He is survived by his wife and five children, one son, Edwin preceded his father to the beyond. The others are Mrs. Oscar Braden, Maryville, Missouri, Mrs. P. H. Kirkpatrick of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Wm. H. and Joseph Roy of Henderson, Ralph J. of the U. S. service. Thirteen grandchildren and one great grand child also survive him.
