Emmett Adam Gipe was born April 18, 1909 in a farm house near Strahan, Iowa. He was a son of Charles and Bernice Moon Gipe and the grandson of pioneer settlers, Adam and Mary Geaque Gipe. He died March 31, 1984 at the age of 74 years, 11 months, and 13 days.
Emmett lived his entire life in Mills County. He attended the Strahan School and Iowa State. He married Velma Marjorie Cole on February 7, 1930 at St. Joseph, Missouri.
They farmed for 43 years near the Strahan community, They operated the Gipe Photography Studio and continued with that business after moving to Glenwood about eight years ago.
emmett was a fifty year member of the Strahan United Methodist Church where he served in all capacities during those years, especially in the youth and music programs. He continued to participate in the choir of the Grace United Methodist Church in Glenwood until his death.
His parents, his brother Everett and his sister Marjorie Gipe Hodoval preceded him in death.
His survivors include his widow, Marjorie of Glenwood; one daughter, Mrs. Daniel S. Franklin (Geraldine) of New York; two sons, Donald of Minneapolis and Douglas of Malvern; six grandchildren and tree great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Grace United Methodist Church, Glenwood, April 3, 1984 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Charls Cowell and Rev. Jerold Irwin in charge of the services.
Pall bearers were Bob Christensen, Jared Woodpile, Scott Hillyer, Melvin Irvin, Harold Teff, and Dave Angus. Honorary bearers were Bernard Roenfeldt, Marvin Woodpile, Kermit Hillyer, Felix Summers, Millard Gee, and Earl Bass.
Ushers were Richrd Miller and Rex Chutney. Mrs. James Paul and Mrs. Pete Ross were in charge of the memorial book.
Flower ladies were Mrs. Bob Christensen, Mrs. Floyd Hillyer, and Mrs. Dave Angus. Music was by Mrs. Dean Dusenberry, organist and the Methodist Church Choir.
Interment was in the Malvern Cemetery. Peterson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
