Rodney Allen Goy, 62, of Malvern, died Aug. 20, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Funeral services were held Aug. 26, 2004, at the Malvern United Methodist Church. Pastor David Kim officiated the services. Private interment was held at the Malvern Cemetery.

Mr. Goy was the son of Richard Dudley and Evelyn Lorraine (Hensley) Goy, born May 27, 1942, in Council Bluffs. He attended the Malvern schools and graduated from high school with the
class of 1960. He attended Iowa State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science. While at Iowa State, he was on the livestock judging team that went to Nationals. He then acquired his Vocational Agriculture teaching certificate at the University of Nebraska and student taught in Nebraska City, Neb. In 1966, he began teaching at Oakland High School. He had a year-round contract and would make student visits during the summer, therefore getting to know the community very quickly. Future Farmers of America was an important and enjoyable part of his teaching career. He enjoyed his students and was proud that several went on to be ag teachers themselves. While in Oakland, he met Janella Kay Laber. They were married on Dec. 27, 1966, at the United Church of Christ in Oakland. They made their first home in Oakland until 1968, when Mr. Goy took a vocational ag teaching position for the Malvern School District. They moved to a small home near Malvern and were blessed with their first son. In December 1969, Mr. Goy’s lifelong dream to return home and farm with his dad was cut short when his father was killed in an auto-train accident. Mr. Goy then resigned his teaching position and began farming, feeding cattle and managing the Goy Oil Company with his brother. In November 1972, Mr. and Mrs. Goy’s second son was born. The family moved into their new home south of Malvern in 1979. In 1980, the oil company was sold to Lee Dinklage, and Mr. Goy continued farming and cattle producing. Through the years, he enjoyed his longhorn cow / calf herd with a buffalo roaming amongst them. Following college degrees, both sons returned home to join their dad in the family business. Mr. Goy was a member of the Malvern Methodist Church and a past member of the choir. He had served on the Malvern School Board, the Mills County Fair Board, the Iowa Cattlemen Association and as board director of the Fairview Golf Course. He was presently serving on the board of directors of the First Community Bank in Sidney. Mr. Goy had been experiencing health problems since 2002 and was in and out of hospitals.

Mr. Goy was preceded in death by his father, stepfather Alfred (Fritz) Knop and father-in-law Victor Laber. He is survived by wife Janella Goy, mother Evelyn Knop, sons Rhett Goy and wife Mindy and Ryan Goy and wife Andrea and granddaughter Ashley Goy, all of Malvern; brother Richard Lanny Goy and wife Tenita of Glenwood; niece Tena Goy of San Francisco, Calif.; nephew Lance Goy of Tempe, Ariz.; and mother-in-law Phyllis Laber of Oakland.
