Josephine M. Pontow, 80, Malvern

Josephine Madge Pontow, 80, of Malvern died July 30, 2001 at her home. Funeral services were August 2, 2001 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Hastings with burial in the East Libery Cemetery. Rev. Robert Remers officiated the services.

Mrs. Pontow was the daughter of Joseph William and Lottie Evangeline (Wilson) Haden, born November 24, 1920 in Hastings. She was raised in the Hastings area and attended Wearin School in Hastings and graduated from Malvern High School. She was married to Albert Elden Pontow February 15, 1942 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Hastings. She taught in Mills County Schools, operated (with her husband) Pontow Grocery from 1961-1975 and was a clerk at Mulholland Grocery until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. She served on the Malvern Library Board and the Mills County Election Board. She enjoyed reading and solving crossword puzzles, and volunteering her time by helping with the kindergarten class at the Chantry School in Malvern.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1993; sisters, Dorothy Haden, Janet Rainey and Marjorie Sanders.

Survivors include her son, Albert Pontow and wife Casey of Hastings; daughters, Joleen Styskal and husband Eugene of Ceresco, Neb.; and Coleen Jensen and husband Steve of Wahoo, Neb.; sisters, Betty Bischoff of Snelling, Calif., and Billie Jean Eastwood and husband Delbert of Indianola; four grandchildren.

Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home of Malvern was in charge of arrangements.
