The following obituary was read:
Florence Ella Carr, daughter of Charles E. and Sarah R. Carr, was born December 8, 1874 in Emerson and passed away at the Murphy Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, October 8, 1950 at the age of 75 years and 10 months.
She attended school in Emerson and after graduation taught in the rural district two years.
On February 2, 1898, she was united in marriage to Walter C. Short of Emerson.
She became a Christian early in life and she and her husband united with the Methodist Church where she has worked faithfully in different organizations.
Two years following their marriage, they moved to Mitchellville, Iowa, where both were employed at the Girls's State Industrial School. After eight years they moved to Denver, Colorado, where they resided eight years. In 1916, they returned to Emerson, where they re-established their home. Later they moved to the Carr home, where Florence administered love,tender care, and devotion to her aged mother.
While in Mitchellville, she became a member of the Eastern Starr and later transferred membership to the Emerson Charpter. For many years she was an active member and served as Worthy Matron during the year of 1930.
Her father, mother, and baby sister preceded her in death, while those left to mourn her passing are her husband, Walter C. Short, her brother Byron L. Carr, both of Emerson, her sister, Hazel Flockheart and her two children Joseph and Frances of Hollywood, California.
Florence was kind and considerate of others and much invested in their welfare. Very few homes in Emerson have not been touched by her kindness.
In paying tribute to her memory, we cannot forget the interest she maintained for her community and the merits of her who labored among us.
Hers was a true friendship and loyalty for those with whom she associated and she gave the best part of her life to their service. Their lives have been made finer and richer for her having passed this way.
"We little guessed how much she did
In smooth our pathway day by day.
How much of joy she brought to us,
how much of care she brushed away;
But now that we must tread alone the thorough fare of life, we find
How many burdens were were spared
by her who was so brave and kind."
