Glenwood Opinion
October 27, 1883

It becomes our painful duty this week to chronicle the rather sudden demise of C.W. Lufkin, Esq., late editor of the GLENWOOD OPINION, which occurred last Sunday morning at 6 o’clock. Mr. Lufkin’s health, never very good, has been gradually failing for some months, and although his most intimate friends felt that his time was short, the announcement of his death came with saddening and startling force upon all. The funeral took place at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, the obsequies being conducted according to the beautiful and impressive rites of the Knights of Pythias, of which order he was an honored member. A large concourse of sympathizing friends were present, coming from all parts of the county.

The deceased was about twenty-seven years of age. He was born and reared in Glenwood, where he was universally esteemed and beloved for his many excellent qualities of head and heart. He took a course in the law department of the State University, but did not enter into the active practice of law, probably for the reason that he purchased the GLENWOOD OPINION after completing his course. In his conduct of the OPINION, he has manifested marked ability; as an editorial writer he excelled. It seems sad indeed, that one so gifted should be thus early removed from the scenes of earthly usefulness. His loss will be felt not by his family alone, but by the readers of the OPINION and his acquaintances all over the county.
