Glenwood Opinion
July 7, 1883

On Friday morning last, at Mineola, a freight brakeman on the Wabash, named Charles Fredericks, met a most shocking death, by accident. As we understand the facts, some cars were being switched, when in some manner one of Fredericks’ feet became fastened between the rail and a plank at a crossing, and before he could extricate himself the train backed upon him, knocking him down and mangling him in a most frightful manner. The wheels passed over his neck, right arm, and right leg near the ankle killing him almost instantly. The remains were brought to this city and properly cared for, then they were sent to his home, at Chillicothe, Mo. on the noon passenger train. The deceased was a married man, having a wife and one child at Chillicothe, and as the wife has been an invalid for some time, it is feared that the sad accident will prove fatal to her. A brother and brother-in-law were running on the same train with him. The bereaved ones have our most sincere sympathy.
