Grace Pauline Howard, 94, of Emerson, died April 30, 2003, at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral services were held May 5, 2003, at the Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home in Malvern. Rev. Lany Pries officiated at the service. Interment was at the Silver City Cemetery.

Mrs. Howard was the daughter of William Jessie and Gertrude Olive (Ralston) Murray, born Oct. 16, 1908, in Lebanon Kan. She attended school in Osawatomie, Kan., and Grace P. Howard later earned her graduate equivalency diploma.

Following school, she moved to Sidney and lived with her aunt and uncle whi1e working at the Nebraska City Canning facility. As needed, she would work in the Sidney Rodeo office for her uncle. In 1932, she married Lee Jones in Shenandoah. They established a home in Sidney and were blessed with a daughter. She married Carl Adle in 1953, and they made their home in Sidney. She was a homemaker and did some housekeeping for others. Mr. Adle died in 1963. Shortly after his death, she began working for the foster grandparent program at the Glenwood State Hospital-School. It was here she met another foster grandparent, Lyle Howard of Emerson. They were united in marriage on Aug. 1, 1971, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. They lived in Emerson and were married only four years when Mr. Howard died on Nov. 13, 1975. Mrs. Howard continued to live in their Emerson home.

Mrs. Howard was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Carl Adle and Lyle Howard; sisters Maude Johnson, Gertrude Hoffmann, Melba Lyons, Maxine Saltzman, Dean Watson and Hazel Woods. She is survived by daughter Elaine Pierce and her husband Lewis of Beaumont, Texas; sister Ruby Watson of Baldwin City, Kan.; granddaughter Teresa Sjulin and husband Bill of Ames; grandson Tom Pierce and wife Stacey of Mooresville, N.C.; great-grandchildren Shawn, Kelly, Kara and Kim Lavallee, Faith Ann Plumtree and Dalton and Colton Pierce; great-great-grandchildren Tyler Carter and Alexis Plumtree; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
