John 0. Hall, 83, of Malvern died July 10, 2001 at his home. Funeral services were July 14, 2001 at First Baptist Church in Malvern with burial in the Malvern Cemetery. Rev. Shirley Albert officiated the services.

Mr. Hall was the son of Otto G. and Bertha (Reed) Hall, born January 2, 1918 in Malvern. He graduated from Malvern Independent School District in 1935. He was married to Virginia M. Gardner October 14, 1943 in Red Oak. He worked various jobs until joining his father in the blacksmith shop in 1937 and attending welding school in 1941. He entered the Army in 1942 and worked in the communications department on the White Pass and Yukon Railroad in the Northwest Territories until 1944. He received an honorable discharge in June, 1945, returning to Malvern to work with his father in the blacksmith trade. He continued at Hall Welding for 41-1/2 years until retiring in 1978. He was very involved in the community and served as Scoutmaster of the Malvern Boy Scout Troop No. 242, served on the city council, and was a member of the Malvern Commercial Club. He was a member of the Malvern First Baptist Church, past Master of the Silver Urn Lodge No. 234, a lifetime member of Harry Hammons Post No. 520 of the American Legion, a charter member of the Malvern Volunteer Rescue, and a member of the Malvern Volunteer Fire Department for 61 years. He was the last surviving charter member of the Southwest Iowa Blacksmith and Welders Association. An important role in his life was being a foster grandparent for about 11 years at the Glenwood State Hospital-School.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Allen and wife Joyce of Malvern, and Warren and wife Betty of Mitchellville; grandchildren: Chris Hall with the U.S. Navy, Richelle Hall of Malvern, Benjamin Hall and wife Shannon and their son Brayden Benjamin of Highland Ranch, Colo., Joshua Hall and fiancee Robyn Rose of Council Bluffs, Zachary Hall and wife Mindy, and their daughter Heidi Rose of Hamburg; aunt, Graáe Crabtree of South Pasadena, Calif.; and cousins and many friends.

Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home of Malvern was in charge of arrangements.
