William Paul Wilson, 65, of Glenwood, died from a heart attack on March 16, 2003, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs. Funeral services were held March 19, 2003, at the Silver City United Methodist Church. Pastor Lynn Zimmerman and Pastor Darrell Hopp officiated at the services.

Interment was at the Silver City Cemetery.

Mr. Wilson was the son of William Daniel and Ruth Pauline (Bartles) Wilson, William P. Wilson born Jan. 19, 1938, in Pacific Junction. He was active in high school athletics and graduated from Glenwood High School in 1956. After graduating, he went to work for Omaha Standard in Council Bluffs, where he received on-the-job training as a welder manufacturing truck bodies.

On April 6, 1958, he married Phyllis Darlene Kruse at the United Methodist Church in Silver City. They made their first home on a farm southwest of Silver City. In 1959, Mr. Wilson was baptized at the Silver City United Methodist Church, where he became an active member. In 1961, they moved to Mrs. Wilson’s grandparents’ former home in Silver City, and in 1965, they built their present home northeast of Glenwood.

Following his job at Omaha Standard, Mr. Wilson’s career included working at the Swift Packing Plant in Glenwood as parts manager for Dale Harper, and he worked for 26 years as a welder in the maintenance department at the Glenwood State Hospital-School. He served 14 years in the National Guard of Iowa, Company B, 168th Infantry, the “Red Bull” at Glenwood. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson were blessed with four children. Mr. Wilson retired in May 2000, giving him more time to enjoy his grandchildren and his many activities. Some of his other enjoyments included morning coffee at the Mineola Steak House; Tuesday morning breakfast at the Silver City Methodist Church; his volunteer church work, where he was trustee at the time of his death; growing sweet corn for the annual church dinner; and spending time at the Southwest IowaSportsmans Club. He had just been elected president of the Sportsmans Club, where he enjoyed trap-shooting. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing and could often be seen with his faithful Chesapeake Bay retriever, Winston. Mr. Wilson taught hunter safety classes for the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his father; brother Bennett Wilson; and daughter Kristy Stoppel. He is survived by his mother, Pauline Wilson of rural Glenwood; wife Phyllis of Glenwood; son Ben Wilson and wife Lynn and their sons Shayne and Kenny, all of Kansas City, Mo.; daughters Amy Han and husband Chris and their children Amanda Crocker, Megan Crocker, Dylan. Crocker, Megan Han, Joe Han and Ryan Han, all of Omaha, and Diana Carbeny and husband Greg and their daughters Isabelle and Ava, all of Papillion, Neb.; son-in-law Greg Stoppel and his children Clifford and Paula, all of Mineola; brother Bruce Wilson and wife Jackie of Glenwood; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.

Hertz Funeral Home in Glenwood was in charge of anangements.
