BRODIGAN, RAPP, ELLIOTT, GERARD, KING, CUNDIFF

Paul Patrick Brodigan, 74, of Glenwood, died March 1, 2003, at his home. A mass of Christian burial was held March 4, 2003, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Glenwood. Burial was at the Glenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Brodigan was the son of Paul Adair and Julia Mary (Rapp) Brodigan, born Feb. 25, 1929, in St. Louis, Mo. He graduated from DeAndreis High School in St. Louis in 1947. He attended St. Louis University Paul P. Brodigan and Hams Teacher’s College. It was in St. Louis where he was united in marriage to Doris Marie Elliott on Sept. 1, 1956. To this union two children were born, James Patrick and Mary Elizabeth. They moved to Indiana, where he completed his degree in education and administration from Indiana University in Bloomington. Following graduation, they moved to Pella, where he was employed as the city activity director for nine years. They moved to Glenwood in 1967, where he became employed with the Glenwood State Hospital-School as their activity director, retiring in 1993 after 27 years of dedicated service. Mr. Brodigan was active in the community, as well as his church. He was a faithful member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was on the Governor’s Commission for the employment of the handicapped, was instrumental in aiding the development of the Special Olympics along with the Kennedy family for the state of Iowa, and acted as president of the Special Olympics for a number of years. He was also a board member of Kiwanis, the Red Cross, the Davies Amphitheater, the National Society for Retarded Citizens, and the Regional and National Recreational Assoc. He was active with the American Heart Association and the Boys Town Committee to assist with the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program. He delivered meals on wheels and was the deserving recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award in 1991.

Mr. Brodigan was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Doris Brodigan of Glenwood; son James Patrick Brodigan of Aurora, Colo.; daughter Mary Elizabeth Gerard and husband Jon of Williamsburg; grandchildren Larry Brodigan, Jonathan King; Grady Brodigan, Logan Gerard and Jennifer Gerard; sister Julia Mary Brodigan of St. Louis; aunt and uncle Frank and Celeste Cundiff of Washington, Mo.; many cousins; and numerous friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the American Heart Association or the Kidney Foundation. Peterson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
