January 17, 1901

Mrs. Mary Wolfe died at her home in Lyons Township Tuesday morning at 8 o’clock. In her death Mills County loses one of its oldest and best known pioneer citizens. She died of bronchial trouble aggravated by old age. The deceased was born in east Tennessee and had she lived until Friday would have been 77 years of age. She came to Mills County in 1851 and in 1853 she married Wm. Wolfe, familiarly known as “Uncle Billy” who preceded her to the Great Unknown some five years ago. Her maiden name was McPheron and she is an aunt of Ralph McPheron of Rawles township. As we have said the deceased was one of Mills County’s best known residents. During the long half century she lived in this locality she was actively identified with all that was good and ennobling. She was active in religious live and all other duties as a wife, mother, and citizen. She was a member of the Methodist church nearly all her life and died in that faith. She leaves five children, viz., two sons, W.S. and A.L. Wolfe of Rawles township and three daughters; Mrs. A.J. Buckingham of Lyons, Mrs. Pat Kilmartin of Rawles and Mrs. Geo. W. Estes of Glenwood. The funeral services were held at the Waubonsie church yesterday at 1 o’clock. The attendance was very large thus indicating in some small degree the respect and esteem in which this excellent woman was held by her friends.
